Unique Baby Names for Girls and Boys That Stand Out

When you're picking a name for your baby there are so many things to think about.

For starters, what does it mean? How does it sound when you add a last name? Do you and your spouse actually like it-like it? Or do you love it, as in, LOVE it?

Wouldn’t it be better if you went for something more classic or common? But then, do you really want to pick a trendy name like James and end up sharing the same name with five other kids in kindergarten?

Is it really a good idea if you go with one of those unique and rare baby names?

Well, if you’re leaning towards the latter, or even considering it, we’ve rounded up 40 unique names for boys and girls that didn’t fall into the top 50 names in Australia last year. Some of these beautiful, albeit unusual, names are a little modern and unique. A few are inspired by Greek mythology, while some have German roots.

But they’re all beautiful names that are worth considering.

What makes a baby name unique?

In a world full of names, finding one that truly stands out is becoming a cherished trend among new parents. After all, many millennial parents remember growing up with several Jessicas, Marks, Sarahs, and other popular common names in their classrooms.

Opting for a rare or unique name that’s influenced by other cultures or even nature gives your child a sense of individuality right from the start.

Unique nature names for your little one

Why not take some inspo from one of the greatest sources of insight and creativity – the natural world?

Whether you’re prompted by mountains, rivers, or flowers, these beautiful earthy names celebrate the world’s natural wonders. Some popular options like “Willow” and “Rose” are timeless, while some are more unique, like “Terra” (Earth) and “Soleil” (Sun), which add an interesting twist.

Here’s the interesting bit: naming your little one after natural elements can create an immediate connection to the environment. From majestic names like “Everest” to earthy picks like “Cedar,” each name is a reminder of the resilience, strength, and beauty of nature.

Why we love rare baby names

Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of expecting a child is the idea of choosing their name. Here’s why my husband and I knew we wanted to choose one of the more unique baby names.

  1. Every time we considered common names like Jessica or Adam, we found out that one of us had already known a ‘Jessica’ or ‘Adam.’ We decided a unique name would allow our child to own their name.
  2. A unique name gives a child a sense of individuality. I mean, let’s be honest here, kids hate sharing!
  3. A unique name gave our child a chance to stand out.

So yes, we knew a unique name was a great choice for us. All we had to was find—and most importantly, agree on one that we both loved.

How to choose the perfect unique baby name

Choosing a baby name is an exciting journey, and there’s no “right” way to do it. After all, it’s a personal choice for each family. (Kim Kardashian named her baby ‘North’ so yes, there are no rules.)

So if you need some creative tips to help you find a name that feels just right, here are some points that can help:

1. Consider names from the everyday

Noun-based names are trendy right now, especially thanks to influencers.

Choosing a name from categories like fruit (Clementine) or flowers (Cataleya) can be a unique choice. Place names are another option—names like Capri or Brooklyn carry extra meaning, especially if they’re special to you or your family.

2. Use your inspiration

Fiction can be a treasure trove of unique name inspiration. Names from books, TV shows, and movies often have strong, memorable characters associated with them. Or you could name your baby on a character from the book you loved as a child.

3. Use historical names

If you’re open to unique sources, you might even look for inspiration in unconventional places. Cemeteries, for example, may sound unusual, but they often reveal names that were popular long ago yet haven’t come back around. Browsing old newspapers and yearbooks can also uncover hidden treasures—names that carry a sense of nostalgia and timelessness.

4. Add a special touch with a unique middle name

If you are afraid your kid might one day rebel for being named after your favourite celestial body, you could play it safe and add a unique middle name instead. Middle names are a fun way to incorporate sentimental elements or themes across your children’s names.

Ultimately, the perfect name feels right to you. Whether it’s a name grounded in nature or something novel, trust your instincts and have fun exploring the possibilities!
