PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is an American animal rights nonprofit organization based in Norfolk, Virginia, and led by Ingrid Newkirk, its international president. Founded in 1980 by Ingrid Newkirk and Alex Pacheco, PETA was influenced by Australian ethicist Peter Singer's book "Animal Liberation" (1975). The organization opposes speciesism and the abuse of animals in any way, such as for food, clothing, entertainment, or research. PETA has more than 9 million members globally and operates under the principle that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way. The name "Peta" itself has multiple meanings depending on the context. In Greek Baby Names, "Peta" means "stone" or "rock". In Native American culture, "Peta" is associated with the "golden eagle" (Black Foot).
