The name Daisy is derived from the Old English "daegeseage," meaning "the day's eye." This name reflects the way the flower opens in the day and closes at night. The name Daisy was first used as a given name in the 19th century, at the same time many other plant and flower names were coined. It was at one time a pet form of the name Margaret because Marguerite, the French version of the name, is also a French name for the oxeye daisy.
