Gender reveal parties are constantly flooding our social media feeds, as people love finding out if their little one will be a boy or girl. And there’s usually a pinata or some fancy cake involved. Having that moment of surprise can bring out a lot of emotion. It can be fun to guess whether your bump feels like a boy or girl, as there will be a lot of time to consider it! Figuring out the sex of your baby might seem like an absolute crime to others, but if you’re dying to know, here are a few fun old-wives-tale ways to try and predict your newborn.

1. The Chinese gender predictor test

This 700-year-old test is based on a legend but is a fun way to predict your little one. It’s based on a gender prediction calendar that was found once upon a time in a royal Chinese tomb. To do the test, you put your birth date and the date of conception into the calendar. Combining these brings up the lunar age and date, which apparently reveals the sex! Don’t take the results to heart too much as there is very little credible sourcing out there for it. However, if you’re looking for a fun test to take on a rainy day, this is the one for you!

2. Watermelon vs basketball test

This one is pretty straightforward; if your bump is shaped like a watermelon, you’re more likely to have a boy, whereas a rounder basketball shape might reveal a girl.

3. Check out your skin!

For some, your acne levels might be able to give away the gender, how lovely! If you’re suffering from a bit more acne than normal, it’s suggested that the extra levels of estrogen from a girl could cause this. On the opposite, if your complexion is somehow clear and glowing, a little boy might be growing inside you!

4. Question your cravings

Apparently, a mama that craves salty foods is more likely to be carrying a boy, whereas a sweet tooth can point to a girl. Cravings aren’t always that black and white though, so you might just simply be pregnant!

5. Morning sickness signs

Girls, girls, girls. Apparently, they are typically to blame for higher levels of nausea in the morning – what a lovely prediction!

6. Assess the bounce and shine in your hair

Hair can say a lot about a person, and apparently a pregnant woman too! According to some old-wives-tales, you’re more likely to be having a boy if your hair looks like it’s now professionally done with zero effort. If your hair is a tad bit more dry or limp, a precious girl might be causing this.

7. Use that dream journal

Dreams never quite make much sense, do they? Well, when you’re pregnant they might become even wackier than normal. If you constantly dream about a boy, it is said that you will be having the opposite. Keep that dream journal next to your bed for a fun way to jot down any gender if you can remember it!

8. The red cabbage gender test

If you want to try something super wacky, try mixing your first-morning wee with cabbage. Sounds legit right? Take some fresh red cabbage, boil it, let it cool, and put some of the cabbage water into a cup. Mix in a bit of your urine with an equal amount of cabbage water. If the water turns pink or red, congratulations you have a boy! Purple, on the other hand, signals a girl.

9. Use baking soda!

This one, for some reason, is pretty popular! Take some of your first-morning urine and mix it with an equal amount of baking soda. The theory says that if it fizzes, you can expect a boy. If the mixture doesn’t react, you’re welcoming a girl.

10. Swing a ring around

Similarly, this is a popular test that seems ridiculous but is fun to do with your partner. Take your wedding ring, tie a string to it and lie on your back. Your partner should hold the string and dangle it over your belly. According to the myth, if you notice the ring swinging in a circle, your little one will be a girl. But if, instead, it swings back and forth, you’re having a boy.

There are countless more tests you can try, and everyone you encounter will probably have another one they swear by. Give them a go and see how many can point you in different directions. Until you have your possible gender reveal party – or until you hold your baby in your arms – enjoy having some fun trying to guess.
