Technology is inescapable in this day and age. Everywhere you turn there is a mobile phone ringing or a TV blaring. Taking your baby to the coffee shop and speaking on the phone with your friends while rocking them are normal everyday habits. We’ve all seen the warnings that radiation can be very harmful, but how much? On top of that, there are other things to be mindful of with technology, like charging wires.

Is your phone dangerous?

There have been countless studies that have all revealed different outcomes about the harm with phones. Undeniably, the radiation that comes from your device can’t be good for you, but it also isn’t definitively linked to damaging results 100% of the time. Either way, lessening the amount you hold your phone to your ear, and keeping it away from your baby as much as possible is a good habit to get into.

As your baby is growing, their skulls are underdeveloped and are sensitive to outside matter. Keeping their exposure to a minimum is always a good idea. Still, having your child near a phone some of the time has not been linked to serious harm, but it doesn’t hurt to avoid it. Until scientists can understand more about radiation and the long-term impacts, it’s best to lower the exposure.

Some helpful tips:

  • Switch to aeroplane mode before letting them play games
  • Plug-in earphones to chat on the phone
  • Use the speakerphone if you don’t have earphones
  • Keep technology off their laps or near their heads
  • Use your phone less when the signal is weak – the weaker the signal the harder your phone is working to connect, making more radiation

Charging cord safety

Being left unsupervised with charging cords can be very dangerous to your child. It’s important to remember that your charger is just as harmful as the outlet. Kids love to stick everything and anything in their mouths, but chargers could end up causing serious electrical burns or other problems. Not to mention the cord could get wrapped around their neck. To keep them safe, make sure you always put your charger away after using it and baby proof the outlets. You can never be too safe when it comes to your tiny explorer!
