Top family activities in Canberra during school holidays
National Zoo
A day at the zoo is always a win, and this one’s packed with wow-factor. With lions, tigers, bears (yes, really) and all the Aussie favourites, the National Zoo is full of animal encounters and hands-on experiences. The kids can get up close with everything from meerkats to monkeys, while you soak up the scenery and maybe even spot a sleepy koala mid-snack.
Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre
This place is basically science disguised as play. Expect lightning bolts, robots, free-fall slides and interactive experiments. It’s perfect for curious minds (and for tiring them out on a rainy day). There’s a Mini Q area for under 6s too, so even the little ones can get stuck into the action.
Australian War Memorial
This might not be your first pick for a family outing, but trust us, there’s something really special about sharing this space with kids. The Discovery Zone is built for hands-on learning, and it’s a gentle way to start important conversations about history, bravery and remembrance. Quiet, thoughtful, and surprisingly engaging.
Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve
If your kids are wild at heart, this is your spot. From spotting wallabies and emus to strolling the boardwalks or bush trails, Tidbinbilla is a nature escape without the long drive. Pack a picnic, bring the binoculars, and keep an eye out for a platypus or two. It’s earthy, grounding and a good excuse to get everyone off their screens for a little while.
Lake Burley Griffin
You can’t go wrong with a picnic by the lake. There’s space to scoot, bike, paddle, or just sprawl under a tree with snacks. Hire a pedal boat, watch the rowers glide past, or let the kids run wild while you finally finish that takeaway coffee. Bonus: golden hour here is peak photo-op.
Wrapping it up
You’re officially set up for success with these Canberra school holidays and term dates. The ball is now in your court – get planning and make this year’s holidays count.
