We asked kids what their dream dollhouse looks like, and their answers are adorable

The imagination is quite a thing to behold. Especially when it comes from the brain of our anti-logic, wonderfully random and occasionally brutally honest kids.

Any parent well-versed in playtime antics knows just how expansive childhood creativity is, especially if they’ve spent enough time in front of a dollhouse.

Dollhouses are where curious thoughts – untethered to reality or reason – thrive. Sure, you could put a couch where it ‘belongs’ in the living room, but why not pop it in the bathroom? It’ll be the perfect place to rest when bath time gets overwhelming (another universal kid-experience).

With all that in mind, what would a child’s dream dollhouse look like? We asked a handful of kids that exact question.

Bright colours, sparkles and - dinosaurs?

If there’s one thing kids love, it’s colour – and not just one showy feature wall to wow guests. We’re talking floor-to-ceiling coats of your child’s current favourite colour towering over them.

Whether that’s a “BIG purple room in a BIG purple house,” (Ishq, 9), a “big blue mansion!” (Zarrick, 7) or in the words of Mia (2) “RAINBOOOWWWW!”

Georgia (5) wasn’t as concerned about wall colour as she was about there being “Sparkles eeeeeverywhere! On the floor, on the wall, even on Percy.” (Percy is their cat.)

Once all that glitter wore off, Zarrick had another big ticket item on his wish list – “A room full of dinosaurs. The fun ones, not the scary ones.”

What’s the difference between fun dinosaurs and scary ones? Your guess is as good as ours.

Summer (6) tried to tick off some house essentials – “A toilet for them to go to the bathroom, a kitchen so they can have snacks and eat yummy food, a bedroom for beauty sleep, more beds for sleepovers!” – but got a little distracted with the idea of a “party room for dancing” by the end.

As for Parker (4), we’re not totally sure what to make of his request for “a couch and elevator, little switches that make noises and even a room so all of the different characters to fit in. I would make it super super tall so everyone can jump off the roof and into a fairy garden!”

Let’s hope the fairy garden has a soft landing.

Just keep swimming

You’d think we interviewed each kid on a sweltering hot day because they all seemed pretty obsessed with a water feature.

For instance, Summer mentioned water activities on three different occasions.

The first time: “I would add a pool in every room, so they can wake up and go straight in the pool. And a unicorn pet.” (The connection is unclear.)

The second time: “Oh, and a hidden waterpark in the bedroom cupboard.” (Like if Narnia had a Wet’n’Wild.)

The third time: “A special dance slumber party room, with a pool.” (Dance, swim, sleep, repeat.)

Ishq also had waterparks on her mind, dreaming of a dollhouse that also has “a dunk tank and a theme park, and Georgia piped in about “a pool, but like a really big one so that you could have a boat in it.”

Little Mia isn’t quite in her seafaring era yet, but she did ask for “a big bath with lots of bubbles.”

And then there’s Zarrick, who didn’t get the water memo and instead fixated on, “A disco party! And pizza robot.”

As for what they would do…

One of the best parts of a dollhouse is the adventures you get to have with friends. So we asked each kid what fun activities they’d do in their dream dollhouse.

Parker brought up his fairy garden again, specifically “jump off the roof and run around the dollhouse and even fly around in the fairy garden.” (A very active day.)

Alongside all her pools and waterparks, Summer was keen on a playground “with lots of fun stuff like swings, merry-go-rounds, and a unicorn rainbow swing and slide.”

Mia kept things nice and simple with her answer “Uh hide and seek, say peak a booo,” and Zarrick had a similar thought, “The coolest game of hide and seek everrrrr, and I would win it probably. And also a BIG jungle adventure!”

Ishq and Georgia had a slightly competitive streak with their respective answers…

Um, we would fight pirates, we would watch TV, and we would play games. Maybe a marshmallow contest.” (The rules of said marshmallow contest are unclear.)

“They could bake cookies and then have a dance-off and if they win they get all the cookies.” (In her dollhouse, you have to work for your treats.)

A pretty exclusive guest list

With a dollhouse this amazing, you wouldn’t just invite anybody. So, who would make the guest list?

Good news – parents seem to make the cut. But a few other names slipped in too.

Summer: “My friends – Tilly, Elliana, Mila, Vicka, Sarah and Rosie! “

Parker: “My sister, my mummy and my daddy and me!”

Mia: “Pappa and Nanna and cat. Meowww.”

Ishq: “Nina and Layla. Oh and mum and dad.”

Zarrick: “The whole world! But maybe just friends and family.”

And then in the words of Georgia, who sounds like she’s sending off an ark, “Best friends, mum and dad, my sisters, all the animals, maybe a little bug.”

What about when party time rolls around?

The true test of a dollhouse is how well it can bring a party to life. From music to decorations and activities, this is what our tiny interviewees proposed a party in their dollhouse would look like.

Summer was after a “rainbow party with unicorn stuff everywhere. I’ll let my friends all choose their favourite song, but my choice would be Green Green Grass.”

Parker immediately got up and grooved, while answering “I would play my favourite song, Pump It Up, and Ghostbusters and have monkey decorations.”

Mia gave two words – “Emma Memma.”

In true tweenage style, Ishq represented Gen Alpha with “lots of purple, love hearts, sprinkles. For music, I would do lots of Taylor Swift – like all of her songs. And we would do karaoke.”

Georgia followed suit, excited by the idea of  “stickers, flowers, and Olivia Rodrigo. And we’d all do cartwheels.”

You’d be pressed to find a dollhouse that meets all that criteria. But there’s one we reckon comes pretty close.

Gabby’s Dollhouse Celebration Dollhouse (yes, from the hit TV show Gabby’s Dollhouse) has so many rooms and surprises to explore. Ride up the meow-mazing cat-a-vator to discover the 6 different rooms and super-cute doll house accessories. From a balloon arch to a kitty-themed toilet, a buffet table, and even a gift bag!

And when you take things up a notch, add on a deluxe room like the Rooftop Roller Party Playset. Suddenly, the roof turns into a skate park with a stage, ramp, and rink.

It’s so awesome, you’d think a kid came up with it.
