Style your baby’s nursery for effortless sleep

It’s the only thing on a parent’s mind when it’s 2am and you rustle awake to the cries of an adorable but temperamental newborn: sleep.

In those first months (and who are we kidding – many, many more after that), it’s like the all-nighters of your Uni days are back. Except this time you have responsibilities, a sore back, and a baby who won’t let you sleep if they can’t.

A good night’s rest has big payoff for you and your little one – but it doesn’t come easily. The best place to start? Their nursery. Optimise their space for a cosy slumber so that it feels just like being snuggled in the comfort of the womb (remember – they were in there for a hot minute).

These are our favourite ways to prep your baby’s nursery for a seamless sleep.

1. Blackout blinds

A dark room signals sleep, for us just as much as our little ones.

Whether you’re trying to lull them into a nap at sunny midday, or trying to trick their minds into sleeping past sunrise – your baby’s nursery should feel like a different time zone. Darkness is also essential for melatonin production, which helps your little one sleep like a dream.

Rolling down blackout blinds can transform the room into a sleepy haven, where no disruptive cracks of daylight can slip through.

2. Sound machine

Sound plays a big part in your baby’s comfort.

Being dropped into a completely new environment – one that’s totally different from the one you started life with – would throw anyone off their sleep schedule. The sounds on this side of life can either be too overwhelming or quiet, compared to the calming background noise they got used to in the womb.

Soothing white or pink noise can reassure your baby while blocking out other distracting sounds, and you can play them through sound machines. These make continuous comforting noises all night long, encouraging deep sleep.

3. A recliner chair for settling

The ideal nursery is designed to help your baby settle down before going to sleep.

A comfy recliner chair gives you a chance to bond, cuddle, and calm your little one into the ideal sleep mode. It can be a lovely part of their bedtime routine that brings a sense of total chill.

One of our faves is iL Tutto’s Chelsea Recliner Glider Chair. This beauty is functional and stylish, made with both ergonomic support and a timeless aesthetic. It has a recline feature for you to lay back and relax, a higher backrest for complete comfort, and 360-degree swivel so you can pick up your cuppa without needing to lift bub.

This chair is here for your late-night feeds, bedtime stories, sleepy-eyed snuggles, and power naps when your little one manages to fall asleep.

And even better news, this chair is so cute that you’ll keep it around when your little one is well into their toddler years and beyond.

4. Temperature control

Babies struggle to regulate temperature on their own. Becoming too hot can make them restless, and in serious cases, unsafe.

The temperature sweet spot tends to be around 18-20 degrees celsius. For the most part, you won’t need to use heaters or aircon to achieve this (or monitor the temperature all night). It’s better to turn the central heating off or set it to low at night. Even if you’re chilly, your baby is more prone to overheating.

Placing their cot away from the door or windows can also help them sleep more comfortably, as your baby’s less likely to encounter disruptive draughts.

5. The right bassinet

When it comes to optimising our own sleep, we spend hours lying down on different display beds and mattresses to pick the right one – because what you sleep on matters.

Your baby’s bassinet is where the magic of sleep really happens.

iL Tutto has another great option here – with the CoZee Breeze bassinet. The transparent sides promote healthy airflow to help regulate your baby’s temperature. Plus, you get to keep a close eye on them (added bonus!).

This bassinet also has rocking legs to soothe your little one to sleep, keeping them in the zen state created by your recliner chair.

Wrapping it up

The design of your baby’s nursery is about so much more than just aesthetics (believe it or not). It can be your greatest asset in achieving a bedtime routine that puts your baby in a steady sleep no matter the time of day.

Think dark, cosy spaces with even temperatures and furniture pieces that lull them to bed effortlessly. And if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to catch some Zzs too.
