Best places to visit in WA during the school holidays
Rottnest Island
Just a short ferry ride from Perth, Rottnest is a school holiday favourite—and for good reason. It’s car-free, which means safe bike rides around the island, and plenty of freedom for the kids to explore. You’ll find over 60 pristine beaches and 20 secluded bays, perfect for picnics, snorkelling, and afternoon swims.
And of course, no trip is complete without spotting a quokka and snapping a selfie with one of the happiest animals on earth.
Margaret River
While the adults might know it for its world-class wine, Margaret River has plenty to offer little travellers too. There are limestone caves like Mammoth and Lake Cave to explore, and the coast offers sheltered beaches with calm waters ideal for kids.
Stop by Sunflowers Animal Farm to feed and cuddle farm animals, or spend a morning sampling chocolate, fudge, and cheese from the local producers. There are also heaps of walking trails and nature playgrounds, making it a great base for an active but relaxing holiday.
The Pinnacles Desert
Located in Nambung National Park, about two hours from Perth, the Pinnacles are like stepping into another world. Kids will love walking among the thousands of limestone spires that rise eerily from the sand.
Visit at sunset for magical light (and great photos), and pair the visit with a stop at the nearby coastal town of Cervantes for fresh seafood or a swim at Hangover Bay.
Busselton Jetty
The historic 1.8 km-long jetty is the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, and walking to the end is a rite of passage for many WA families.
If little legs get tired, there’s a charming red train that runs the length of the jetty. Down at the end, the Underwater Observatory has a unique view of marine life from 8 metres below the ocean surface.
With calm beaches, safe swimming spots, and grassy picnic areas nearby, it’s an easy, breezy day out.
Karijini National Park
Karijini is WA’s wild beauty at its best. Located in the Pilbara region, it’s a longer trip (best suited for older kids or adventurous families), but so worth the journey.
The gorges here are spectacular, with hidden waterfalls, crystal-clear swimming holes, and natural rock slides. Families can hike into Dales Gorge, swim in Fern Pool, and even camp under the stars for a truly immersive experience. It’s a chance to unplug, explore, and show kids a side of Australia they won’t find in textbooks.
Kalbarri National Park
Kalbarri serves up epic views and easy access to adventure. The Skywalk is a standout with two dramatic viewing platforms that jut out 100 metres above the Murchison River Gorge.
There’s also canoeing, wildlife spotting, and coastal cliff walks to keep things interesting. Nature’s Window is a popular photo stop (and surprisingly accessible), and the nearby town has plenty of family-friendly accommodation and food options to make the trip comfortable.
Esperance
With squeaky white sand and vibrant blue water, Esperance is one of WA’s most photogenic regions.
Head to Cape Le Grand National Park for hiking and beach hopping, and don’t miss Lucky Bay, where kangaroos casually laze on the sand like they own the place (because they kind of do). For something different, check out the pink waters of Lake Hillier (best viewed by scenic flight) or explore the Great Ocean Drive by car.
Wrapping it up
With the school holiday dates in hand, it’s time to get creative with your plans. Whatever you get up to, make sure there’s some R&R scheduled in (you deserve it).
