Best family activities during Tasmania school holidays
Explore MONA or TMAG
ONA brings the quirky, the bold and the head-scratching in a way that draws in older kids and tweens. (They’ll be talking about the art all afternoon – trust us.) Meanwhile, TMAG (Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery) is a little more kid-friendly with interactive exhibits, hands-on learning zones and a great way to sneak in a bit of history without anyone realising they’re learning.
Take a nature walk
Breathe in that crisp Tassie air and head off for an outdoor adventure. Mt Field National Park offers stunning waterfalls and easy walks that even little legs can manage. Or make a day of it at Cradle Mountain with wombat sightings, alpine views, and the kind of quiet that only happens when everyone’s too busy looking at the scenery to squabble.
Visit local markets
Markets are parenting gold. The kids can nibble on local treats, listen to live music, or hunt for handmade treasures while you grab a coffee and actually enjoy it. Salamanca Market is buzzing with creativity and colour, while Harvest Launceston is full of fresh produce and friendly faces. It’s a great way to feel like a local – and pick up lunch while you’re at it.
Head to the beach
Tasmania’s beaches are the real deal. No crowds, no stress, just sand, salt, and space to roam. Coles Bay is postcard-worthy, Bicheno has those laid-back beach town vibes, and Kingston Beach is great for a quick dip followed by salty chips. Pack the towels, slap on the sunscreen, and let the kids run wild while you watch from your towel throne.
Join school holiday programs
You don’t need to plan every hour of the holidays – that’s what school holiday programs are for. Local libraries, councils and community centres often run craft sessions, sports days, coding clubs, and nature workshops – many of them free or low cost. It’s a win-win: they stay busy, you get a breather.
Wrapping it up
School holidays can be a juggle, but they’re also a chance to pause and soak up the moments that matter. Keep this guide handy, and you’ll be ready for whatever the year brings — tantrums, beach days and all.
