Best family-friendly activities in SA during school holidays
Visit the Adelaide Zoo
A staple for Adelaide families, the Adelaide Zoo is home to over 2,500 animals and is one of the only places in the Southern Hemisphere where you can see giant pandas.
Wang Wang and Fu Ni are crowd favourites, but there’s also a rainforest aviary, kids’ nature playground, and interactive keeper talks throughout the day. It’s an easy, walkable zoo set in the heart of the city, which is perfect for younger kids and strollers.
Pack a picnic or grab lunch at the café and enjoy a full day of animal adventures.
Explore Kangaroo Island
Just a short flight or ferry ride from the mainland, Kangaroo Island feels like a world away. It’s brimming with rugged coastlines, native wildlife, and peaceful beaches.
Families can visit the Seal Bay Conservation Park to walk among Australian sea lions, go sandboarding at Little Sahara, or spot koalas snoozing in the trees. With plenty of cabins, cottages, and family-friendly stays, it’s ideal for a long weekend getaway.
Go to the South Australian Museum
If the weather takes a turn or you’re looking for something educational (but still fun), the South Australian Museum is a winner.
Entry is free, and there’s something for every age group, including towering dinosaur skeletons, ancient Egyptian mummies, and one of the largest collections of Aboriginal cultural material in the world.
There are plenty of hands-on exhibits and family-friendly discovery zones that let kids get stuck in without the usual ‘don’t touch’ warnings.
Hit the beaches
South Australia’s coastline delivers big time when it comes to classic family beach days. Glenelg is the go-to for its buzzing jetty, playgrounds, and easy access to shops and ice cream, while Semaphore has a more chilled vibe with plenty of space for cricket matches and sandy feet.
Brighton Beach is great for a sunset picnic or a cheeky evening dip. Many of these spots have calm, shallow waters ideal for younger swimmers, and you can cap off the day with fish and chips straight from the paper.
Adelaide Hills Adventure
Less than an hour’s drive from the city, the Adelaide Hills is a lush escape full of nature walks, local produce, and hidden gems. Families can take a bushwalk to the Mount Lofty summit or spend a few hours wandering the beautiful Mount Lofty Botanic Garden.
Kids will love the Big Rocking Horse in Gumeracha (and the adjoining wildlife park), while parents can sneak in a visit to a local winery or café. Autumn is especially stunning here, with golden leaves and cosy vibes all round.
Ride the roller coasters at the Adelaide Showground
If your kids are thrill-seekers, the Adelaide Showground often plays host to pop-up events, fairs, and carnivals during school holidays.
From classic show rides and dodgem cars to fairy floss and side-show alley games, it’s a hit for tweens and teens. Keep an eye on what’s scheduled (like the Royal Adelaide Show or seasonal carnivals) and plan a visit when the excitement is in full swing.
Wrapping it up
Now that you have the school holiday dates, the fun can begin. Bookmark some vacay spots, rally the friend groups, and prepare to enjoy the best of school holidays in South Australia.
