Stan has released its lineup for June and film buffs will be thrilled to know that they can catch the critically acclaimed film The Whale.
Starring Academy Award-winner Brendan Fraser (The Mummy) and Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) and directed by Darren Aronofsky, The Whale follows a reclusive English teacher desperate to reconnect with his teenage daughter for a last chance at redemption.
Here’s a snippet of just one of the glowing reviews the film (and Fraser) has received:
Every member of the small ensemble makes an impression, even the mostly unseen Sathya Sridharan as a friendly pizza delivery guy who never fails to ask about Charlie’s welfare from behind the closed apartment door.
The heroic performance in The Whale that will deservingly dominate the attention, however, is Fraser, who hasn’t been this good since Gods and Monsters. A terrific actor who fell off the radar for too long, he uses his big puppy-dog eyes to lovely effect, never letting us forget there’s a man scarred by raw emotional lacerations beneath the wheezing, sweating mound of flesh.
Enough said!
Other notable titles include Paul T. Goldman – an American true crime documentary miniseries that revolves around Paul Finkelman, a man who uncovers fraud and deception caused by his ex-wife. An inscrutable blend of true crime and true-crime satire, the documentary features storytelling and dramatised reenactments of Finkelman’s life to uncover the dramatic double life of Finkelman’s wife.
If you’ve got some young adults in the house they might be keen to catch the brand new Stan Original Series Year Of. From the makers of Bump and starring Matt Nable and Danielle Cormack, this series follows the highs and lows of a group of inner-city teens during their final tumultuous years of high school. When a shocking event threatens to shake the community, it sets each teen on a path of change and self-discovery. Old friendships fall apart to make way for surprising new ones. It’s the most intense time of their lives… so far, anyway.
And, in honour of World Environment Day, the Stan Original Documentary Revealed: Reefshot is a must-see. Led by Andy Ridley, the founder of Earth Hour, Revealed: Reefshot is the incredible true story of the modern-day race to save the Great Barrier Reef from climate change. In Ridley’s latest project, the Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, Ridley combines a group of unlikely local heroes to rally the public, pool their resources and blend ancient knowledge with modern science to attempt one of the world’s biggest and most important biological surveys – the Great Barrier Reef Census.
