How many times have you gone to a kids' show and had your little one leave way over-stimulated? You Are The Sun at the Sydney Opera House was a rare treat for families with babies and toddlers that did something different.
This beautifully crafted sensory theatre experience is designed especially for little ones aged 0–2. It isn’t your typical kids’ show. There are no big characters, bright lights, or booming sounds. Instead, it invites families into a peaceful, immersive space where music, movement, and nature gently come together.
It’s not often you find baby-friendly activities that go beyond the usual playground circuit, so this was something truly unique.
A calm, welcoming space
From the very first note, the room felt like a warm exhale. Performed in the Opera House’s Centre for Creativity, the space was open and welcoming, designed with soft textures, earthy tones, and gentle lighting.
Babies and carers sat together on the floor, free to move, explore, and respond however they needed. It felt more like a shared sensory meditation than a performance, which is exactly what made it so special.

Live music with heart
Created by UK-based HurlyBurly Theatre, You Are The Sun combines sensory play for babies with live music in the most tender way. The performers, with their soft voices and calm presence, guided the experience with original songs inspired by elements of nature: sunlight, soil, breath, and water.
It was slow, soothing, and never overwhelming — perfect for curious little minds just starting to make sense of the world.
Designed for little movers
Unlike many live shows for kids, there was no pressure for little ones to sit still or stay quiet (thank goodness!)
If a toddler wanted to crawl toward the performers or roll around on a mat, they were free to do just that.
That sense of freedom creates a relaxed, inclusive vibe that both kids and parents seemed to appreciate. For many families, especially those with babies, finding events where everyone feels genuinely welcome can be tricky. This one nailed it.
Made with intention
What stood out most was how thoughtful the entire experience felt. Every detail — from the pace of the show to the minimalistic set and the gentle transitions — seemed to be designed with both baby and parent in mind.
It didn’t go down the normal ‘kids entertainment’ route, instead creating a calm, connected moment in time, where both adult and child could slow down and share something beautiful together.
Final thoughts
Experiences like You Are The Sun are so worth keeping an eye out for.
It’s not every day you find theatre that truly honours the pace and needs of the very young, and even rarer to find something that leaves adults feeling just as enriched.
While this particular season has wrapped, we’re hoping to see more like it in the future.
Because this combination of art, sensory play, and a baby-friendly environment was just pure magic.
