Who knows better about what you’ll need when cruising with your little passengers than parents who’ve cruised those same streets before you?

From safety features to boot space, to car seat attachments and the all-important in-built entertainment for when nothing but an episode of Bluey will cut it. Even down to things like servicing and warranty can be important.

In partnership with our friends at Kia Australia, the Kiindred team parents share their must-have family car features.

Bianca, Creative Lead: Big console space

“Sometimes your handbag/nappy bag can’t hold everything, or, you forget to replenish when you’re rushing out the door. Having an “emergency” backup stash of all the essentials: wipes, nappies, bandaids, snacks, water bottles, sunnies etc can be a lifesaver when you’re out and about at a park or a long way from home.“

Yarna, Brand Partnerships Manager: Blast that Bluetooth!

“We love checking in with friends and family when we’re all in the car together, the kids can chat and update grandparents on their day or I can get a quick conversation in (rather than waiting days for 5 minutes of peace).

It also helps when kids are restless or overtired after a big day and we pump our favourite Robo Poli or Wiggles music and sing together. And mum and dad can also crank our own tunes when the little ones aren’t there too…”

Viva, Culture & Lifestyle Editor: Hands-free everything!

“As a mum, it’s all about hands-free for me! Getting into the car these days normally involves an ordeal: folding the stroller to lift it into the boot, getting my kids into their car seats and strapping them in – often in the face of protest, while ticking all the ‘things’ off my mental load list and trying to get to that playdate on time…

Needless to say, being able to easily unlock my car and lift the boot is essential for me. When you’re in the trenches and juggling a lot, anything that makes life that little bit easier is a must.”

Jess, Editor: Warranty and Servicing…

“It’s not exactly exciting to think about, but it’s an important one. I am constantly shocked at just how much servicing and parts can sting you when it comes to ongoing maintenance with a car. Looking for one that comes with an extended warranty and also free or fixed servicing costs is a good idea. When you’re running a household those unexpected expenses can really hurt so knowing what you’re in for when it comes to servicing is important.

Another non-negotiable for me in my car is leather upholstery. The number of times I’ve wiped yoghurt (or worse) from the seats and interiors – I shudder to think what my car would look like if I couldn’t just wipe them down.“

Sabir, Co-founder and CEO: Give me ALL the tech!

“I’m a sucker for a gadget and I love having blind-spot monitors, cameras and sensors for parking and driving. They can honestly be a life-saver, and a little helping hand when the kids are distracting you from the back seat. We live and work near the city and we’re constantly zipping around between work, school and home. We need a big car to fit the 3 kids (and ALL the stuff) in the back, so having the cameras and sensors gives you added peace of mind for added safety with little ones.”

Emmy, Co-founder and Head of Content: Boot space is a must!

“For me having plenty of boot space is everything! When you have little ones, the pram takes up much of your boot space, let alone ALL the other things you need to take with you when you’ve got 3 kids as we do. A big enough boot to fit baby bags, scooters, helmets – and to double as a changing table for nappy changes on the go is essential.

With our families all out of town, we also love to get out of Sydney (when Covid allows us, that is) to see them and so having plenty of space to fit everything we need is important. That’s where that added boot space really comes in handy.”

When you’re a parent, your car is so much more than just a car. It’s your co-parent, your getaway car and your sanity saver. There’s no avoiding crumbs, toys, spare clothes, Ipads, dummies, suspicious-looking stains and sticky fingerprints from taking over your car.

Buying a family car is a huge decision and you want to know you will love it for years to come (and as your family grows). Knowing what to look for and what is important for your family is key. The Kia family car range is made with modern parents in mind. Safety is at the core but that doesn’t mean they compromise on technology,  innovation and sophisticated styling.

This is a paid partnership between Kiindred x Kia Australia.
